The University of Kentucky Forensics team successfully hosted its second annual collegiate speech and debate tournament on the UK campus October 10-11th. Teams from 10 states representing 20 different universities and colleges attended this year’s event. The Bluegrass Invitational offers competition in thirteen different public speaking events and three forms of debate.
Team sweepstakes awards were given to the top schools in individual events, debate, and combined sweepstakes. Eastern Michigan University won the large division of individual event sweepstakes. Berry College took first place in the small division of individual events. Grove City College was the team in debate sweepstakes. Finally, in combined sweepstakes which requires that teams participate in individual events and debate, Carson-Newman University was crowned the tournament champions for the entire weekend.
With over 260 entries in seventeen different speaking and debate categories, the tournament has continued to grow and mature as an intercollegiate event. In addition to the honor of hosting twenty other colleges and universities on the UK campus, UK Forensics was also featured on the October 11th edition of UK at the Half, a radio segment which airs during the halftimes shows of home football and basketball games. The segment was broadcast over the entire state of Kentucky via the UK Sports Network and nationally via SiriusXM radio.
While the returning members of the UK Forensics team were assisting in hosting the tournament, the four new novice competitors had their first experience with a collegiate competition. Kaylon Kennedy placed 5th in program oral interpretation and Léna Touchard was awarded top novice recognitions in persuasive speaking.
The team’s next tournament will be the Chief Justice Invitational hosted by Marshall University on October 25th and 26th. UK Forensics is a student organization within the College of Communication and Information.
