The University of Kentucky Forensics Team successfully hosted its first collegiate speech and debate tournament October 11th-12th here on the UK campus. Over 150 people representing 14 teams from across 6 states took part in this two day event known as the Bluegrass Invitational.
Months of planning and work went into making this tournament a successful event. The coaches and students worked very hard to make sure that even the smallest of details were not overlooked. In the end, Bowling Green State University from Bowling Green, OH was triumphant at this tournament, taking many individual championships and winning the tournament overall as well.
As is tradition in forensics competition, the returning members of the UK Forensics Team did not compete in the event, but rather served as the tournament staff helping to direct and facilitate the competition. However, the four new recruits on the team did take part in the tournament as competitors. The debate team of Brynne Reilly and Samuel Northrup earned Quarterfinalist honors in the novice division of parliamentary debate.
With over 200 entries in 15 events, this tournament was very well attended for a brand new event. A number of schools have even gone so far as to commit to returning for the second annual Bluegrass Invitational tentatively set to take place in October of 2014. With a continued track record of punctuality and excellence, this tournament should become a staple of regional competition within the next few years.
